Provides support directly to cancer patients at The Moncton Hospital as they undergo treatment for small items and amenities.
Examples: a taxi fare, a grocery card, a prescription top-up, a bus pass, or headwear for chemo treatments.
Intent is to improve their quality of life and maintain dignity during their time of need. The fund will help patients not have to choose between a cab ride home, groceries or other personal needs and amenities that many of us take for granted.
A cancer diagnosis can bring with it new financial burdens. The goal of the fund is to make life a little easier, a little kinder for the patient.
Proceeds to create the Fund will be collected and invested by the Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation.
How did the idea of the Fund start?
The Foundation and the Schofields discussed a way to commemorate Becca’s legacy while helping cancer patients at The Moncton Hospital at the same time.
Becca believed that no gesture was too small. The idea that cancer patients could be helped with small items that, faced with the reality of fighting cancer can pose significant stress, combined with the impact that affordable donations could have, appealed to Becca’s parents.
Also, once established, the Rebecca Schofield Fund will live forever. Through an investment called an endowment, the principal is never accessed but the interest generated supplies the monies for the fund. Becca was concerned that nobody would remember her. Now she will have her kindness movement and a fund that helps cancer patients and their families in a way that she would have approved.
Why are we raising “Smile Money”?
Helping others made Rebecca Schofield smile. During her cancer treatment, she received an anonymous gift of money with the instructions that it could only be used on things that would make her smile. That was the day she coined the phrase ‘smile money’.
Becca believed that being kind could have a huge and positive impact on the lives of people every day and her wish to leave the world a better place, are the inspiration behind the Rebecca Schofield Fund. She believed that people felt good about helping others; that helping others would make people smile.
How does the fund work?
The fund starts with you. Each donation will be collectively invested in an endowment which will sustain the program well into the future and carry on Becca’s wishes and legacy. Once the proceeds are invested, the interest will be used to perform the fund’s mission - to help cancer patients at The Moncton Hospital directly through small acts of kindness.
