Back-to-school time is usually the second largest shopping season of the year but things are different in 2020 given the pandemic.
Field Agent Canada surveyed more than 300 mothers with children returning to school to get a snapshot of their plans for September.
Spokesperson Jeff Doucette says moms have said in previous surveys they’ll be spending more on clothes, shoes and school supplies.
But he says moms plan on spending less this year – a first for this back-to-school survey.
Moms will also be shopping at fewer bricks-and-mortar stores but most will visit at least one in person.
More moms also intend to shop online for items this year.
“In the past we’ve seen online shopping being driven by price or savings online. But this year it seems to be more about safety and convenience,” says Doucette.
He adds the data shows a small percentage of moms won’t be sending their kids back to class and will instead focus on home-schooling
