A Moncton woman with Stage 4 breast cancer wanted to raise $2,000 by taking part in the annual NB Doctors Cycling Against Cancer Ride.
The ride was held over five days in June but Gini Bourque continued cycling and has now raised more than $25,000 for the cause.
Bourque, 47, says she wants to support other cancer patients and feels it’s important to talk about her experience with cancer.
“I’m comfortable talking about having cancer. I’m trying to show people that you can be active, you can do things, you trust your doctors… they are going to take care of you,” she notes.
“I’ll talk about what my treatments have been like. I’ll talk about how hard it was. I’ll talk about the good days, the bad days. I have some bad days when I feel really sad for myself but then I pick myself up and I realize how lucky I am.”
Bourque says she’s been overwhelmed by the community generosity.
Money raised from the cycling event goes to support The Moncton Hospital’s Dr. Sheldon H. Rubin Oncology Clinic.
