Moncton’s Canada Day celebrations on the Riverfront have been cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tri-community fireworks are also cancelled.
Spokesperson Isabelle LeBlanc says the city is now planning a creative approach to mark July 1 and more details are coming soon.
LeBlanc adds the headliners for 2020 have already been secured for next year but the names are not being released yet.
A provincial directive is prohibiting large gatherings until at least the end of the year.
Meantime, the Multicultural Association of the Greater Moncton Area (MAGMA) also announced its annual Mosaiq Multicultural Festival planned for July-17-18 has been cancelled.
“I am heartbroken. I believe this year was going to be very special. Our mission for 2020 was to shine a big light on Moncton itself,” says festival chair Camelia Radu.
MAGMA says the festival had incredible community support this year and planning is already underway for 2021.
