The New Brunswick Medical Society has concerns about the privatization of cannabis sales in the province.
President Dr. Chris Goodyear says the organization wants to be included as the provincial government hands over sales to a single private operator.
“We would be like to be at the table for any discussions around the privatization of this product and how it’s going to be marketed to the population,” he says.
Dr. Goodyear says the Society has concerns about cannabis use in general and the overall health effects it can potentially have on the population.
The Society argues that while cannabis is legal, it doesn’t mean it’s a safe product.
He adds cannabis can speed up the heart rate, increase anxiety and in more serious cases can lead to psychotic episodes and seizures.
He adds research shows the medicinal benefits of cannabis are quite narrow but the Society doesn’t dispute that some people may benefit from using it.
