Moncton South Liberal MLA Cathy Rogers hopes pay equity is on the minds of the Progressive Conservative government as the legislature resumes next week.
The New Brunswick Coalition for Pay Equity is urging the province to give community caregivers a raise noting how the sector is overworked, underpaid and undervalued.
Rogers notes how the previous Liberal government did give caregivers a small raise but acknowledges more needs to be done.
She says this issue is critical given the numbers of seniors who need long term care.
“Whether it’s helping seniors to stay in their homes longer or whether it’s in special care homes or nursing homes… but also with regard to other care needs in group homes and in the broader care sector… we have much more complex needs now.”
Rogers adds community caregiving is a large, growing sector and she would like to see pay equity mentioned in the upcoming throne speech.
