The Bloc Quebecois will have a larger presence in the next Parliament but is Quebec separation still on its agenda?
While there will always be die-hard separatists, a Canadian politics professor doesn’t think the new generation has that desire.
Mount Allison University’s Mario Levesque says younger Quebecers are seeing their place within the country.
“They want a place at the table within Canada. But at the same time, they don’t want the federal government to intrude on their provincial powers. There’s nothing wrong with that. I think we should appreciate that here too in New Brunswick.”
Given its minority status, Levesque says the Trudeau government will have to work with other parties.
But he doesn’t see the Liberals reaching out to the Bloc Quebecois and its leader Yves-Francois Blanchet for direct support unless it’s in Quebec’s interests.
