A resolution has been reached in the civil lawsuit launched by a family after their son was killed by a train in downtown Moncton.
Steven Harel, 29, died in July 2016 when his electric wheelchair became stuck in a railway crossing on Robinson Street and he was hit by a train.
In the wake of the tragedy, family lawyer Brian Murphy says the Harel family has been quite pleased by some of the work to upgrade rail crossings in the city.
“They (Steven’s parents) think that this case – as sad as it was – resulted in more awareness and more work being done on such crossings across the country,” he notes.
Murphy says the lawsuit was launched against CN Rail and the City of Moncton who had a joint responsibility for maintaining the road bed and the rail bed.
The lawsuit also included three companies related to the electric wheelchair.
He adds the terms of the settlement will not be disclosed.
