Many drivers have been vocal about the traffic changes on Hillsborough Road near the Gunningsville Bridge in the Town of Riverview since they were made in 2018.
To increase capacity, the town added two left turning lanes on the bridge and two eastbound lanes were added on Hillsborough Road as far as Hillsview Avenue.
Town spokesperson Meghan Cross says feedback was taken into consideration this year when water main work meant the road needed to be resurfaced.
“One of the things that we heard was that was a short amount of space (200 metres) to complete a merge, so we extended the merge lane by 400 metres. So now drivers are merging at Chesswood Drive,” she notes.
Cross says the merge lanes were also switched this year to allow the right lane to merge into the left lane given the number of side streets along Hillsborough Road.
To help improve safety, the town’s traffic committee has also recently announced a couple of changes in lane markings – one at the lane merge warning sign and another near the end of the merge lanes.
Cross adds those recommendations have been brought to a contractor and the work is expected to begin next week depending on the weather.
The Town of Riverview has made the traffic changes to increase capacity at the Gunningsville Bridge given the impending closure of the Causeway from four to six months in 2021.
