Vaping was like the “Wild, Wild West” up until last year when the federal government introduced regulations according to the health minister.
Ginette Petitpas-Taylor is responding to the rise of respiratory illnesses among young people linked to vaping across North America.
She says further consultations are underway in order to increase the regulations and make them stricter.
“My number one priority is protecting our youth. We certainly want to ensure that the regulations that are in place are going to ensure that these products are not appealing to our youth as well,” she says.
Petitpas-Taylor says the consultations are looking at eliminating the marketing of e-cigarettes and banning certain flavours which may be appealing to youth.
She also noted that vaping can be a harm reduction measure for adults.
Petitpas-Taylor adds that many Canadians have told her that vaping has helped them quit smoking.
