The John Howard Society of Southeastern New Brunswick and Visions United Church have teamed up to create 20 affordable apartments in a new Moncton development being called the “Community Hub”.
The organizations recognize the great need for affordable housing in the community.
John Howard Society executive director Joanne Murray says this project will be more than just apartments.
The two-storey building will also have office space for non-profit organizations, work spaces with computers, a teaching kitchen and a multi-purpose room.
“The layout (for apartments) is exactly the same as it is with our current property on Flanders Court. They are one bedroom, kitchen and living room combined. They come fully furnished… everything someone needs to just move in,” Murray notes.
The more than $4 million “Community Hub” will be built on Joyce Avenue surrounded by current subsidized housing.
Murray adds the idea is to include the existing neighbourhood as part of this development.
Construction is expected to begin next month.
Murray adds the hope is to have the building ready for interior work over the winter with a planned opening next August.
