The wild blueberry industry has been enjoying a lot of growth recently across New Brunswick.
This week marks the second edition of a campaign called Wild Blueberry Week.
Ed Goguen, vice-chair of the provincial blueberries association Bleuets NB Blueberries (BNBB), says 123 restaurants are participating this year serving and promoting various wild blueberry dishes.
“We export our blueberries to over 20 countries. But it seems that in New Brunswick some people use them and like them very much. However, there are still a lot of people who are not even that familiar with them. Anyway, this was a good way to do it,” he notes.
Goguen says many people may only use blueberries in traditional ways such as making muffins or pies.
But he adds research has shown huge benefits from eating blueberries and they are now often used in healthy foods such as smoothies.
New Brunswick has been the largest wild blueberry producer in Atlantic Canada for the last three years.
