Renovations have been underway for the last month at 75 Albert Street to transform the building into Moncton’s new homeless shelter.
Operated by the House of Nazareth, the non-profit organization officially took possession of the building on July 1st.
The shelter will have between 130 and 180 beds, serve three meals a day, offer laundry services and feature a 24 hour drop-in centre.
Plans are in the works to try and secure mental health services as well.
House of Nazareth executive director Jean Dube says construction delays have come up which is normal but he’s feeling pressure to open soon given the tent city just down the street.
“But you know at the end of the day, we want to make sure that when we open that the place is complete, secure and most respectful for the population we will have as clients.
He says lots of volunteers have come on board to offer help which has cut down on costs.
Dube expects the new shelter will open this month but he was hesitant to give a firm date.
