Researchers know that a parasite called trichomonosis has been killing songbirds in the Maritimes.
But can the parasite be spread to humans?
Wildlife pathologist Laura Bourque with the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative says no.
“Always use good hygiene when interacting with birds and cleaning their bird feeders. There are other types of diseases that can be potentially transmitted from dirty bird seed to those who are handling it,” she says.
Bourque adds owners of hummingbird feeders don’t have to worry since it seems only seed eating birds have been affected by trichomonosis.
She applauds the many Maritimers who have been concerned about birds and have contacted the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative with their concerns this year.
