Disappointing and disheartening are two words being used to describe the vandalism of a rainbow crosswalk in Riverview.
The crosswalk was installed only a week ago near Riverview High School to support the LGBTQ+ community.
Spokesperson Meghan Cross says the town has been painting these crosswalks for several years now and this is the first such incident in Riverview.
“We’ve had nothing but positive comments from the community. Every time those pictures are shared online we hear from residents that they are thrilled to see the return of the crosswalks and what that symbolizes to the LGBTQ+ community here in Riverview,” she notes.
Cross adds Riverview is a safe, open and welcoming community and this act of vandalism is not reflective of the town’s values.
She says public works crews will have to repaint the crosswalk since pressure washing did not remove all of the graffiti and skid marks.
Codiac RCMP are investigating the act of vandalism which occurred over the weekend.
