A report shows a staggering difference in milk prices between Atlantic Canada and the rest of the country.
During the last week of May, Field Agent Canada conducted a cross-country survey of numerous retailers in twenty cities.
Atlantic Canadians are paying a lot more for milk compared to Ontario and Western Canada.
Spokesperson Jeff Doucette says Charlottetown had the most expensive milk prices in Canada averaging $1.83 per litre based on a four litre container – which is 40 percent higher than the national average.
Moncton was not that far behind averaging $1.68 per litre which is 30 percent higher than the national average.
Ottawa had the cheapest prices in Canada averaging $1.10 per litre based on a four litre container.
Doucette says the milk supply management system means smaller provinces with smaller farms are less efficient which pushes up prices.
He adds milk can’t cross provincial borders so cheaper milk in Ontario can’t be sold in the Maritimes.
