A motion has been introduced at Moncton City Council to once again consider painting rainbow crosswalks in the downtown.
Moncton was a leader in the province in 2016 and 2017 and painted a number of rainbow crosswalks along Main Street.
Councillor Shawn Crossman introduced the motion before City Council noting how rainbow crosswalks are way to show support and acceptance of the LGBTQ community.
“Whereas Moncton is one of New Brunswick’s most inclusive cities and whereas, the City of Moncton Strategic Plan promotes the notion that Moncton is a
culturally vibrant community that promotes and celebrates diversity,” he stated.
Riverview and Dieppe both painted rainbow crosswalks last summer and intend to have them again this year.
The City of Moncton opted against painting them last year and decided to wait for a safety study from the Transportation Association of Canada.
TAC recently found there is a lack of data or research into the matter to determine safety.
City council will vote on the motion on July 15th.
