Each year 24 young women and 24 young men from across the country are given the opportunity to go to NAV Camp.
They fly to Ottawa, and they learn and train for aviation opportunities.
Moncton teen Brady Hackett is one of the 48 who was chosen to attend this summer.
He says his mom was the first to tell him about the camp, and after giving it some thought, and decided it could be very interesting.
“There are all kinds of different sciences of aviation and the jobs it offers. It’s not just being a pilot, there’s Air Traffic Control, there’s calculations and sciences, I became more and more interested in it. Sp I wrote the application letter, filled out all of the forms. I reached out to an old teacher Mrs. Edison and she happily wrote the letter of recommendation, and off it went.”
Hackett says he is always curious to know how things work. The thought of how we get a ton of metal filled with oil into the air really intrigued him, “I also really liked the whole prospect of doing simulations. I really enjoy the realistic training that they go through, it looks fun to me. So I look forward to trying that as well.”
The application went out in December or January, and Hackett says as time went by he started to assume that he hadn’t been chosen.
His mom got the good news a few months later, ” Just after March break, she just hit me with it. She told me, “You got accepted, we got the call.” I just stood there, and it slowly began to hit me, the reality of it. Have you ever heard of the expression where you spiral downward and start to think of all of the bad things in your life? I spiralled up.”
Hackett will board the plane to fly to Ottawa in August, where he will spend a week at NAV Camp.
NAV Canada receives around 250 applications from youth across the country, who want the opportunity to go to camp.
Ten were chosen from the Atlantic provinces, two are from New Brunswick.
