Residents of Riverview could be fined if they allow their grass to grow more than 20 centimetres (about 8 inches) in height.
Town Council has given second and third reading to a Tall Grasses Bylaw.
Councillor Lana Hansen has heard some concerns from residents about how the bylaw may pit neighbour against neighbour.
“They felt that it was unfortunate that residents would have to get involved in a situation where they are reporting their neighbours. They felt that we (the town) should take a more active role in enforcing the bylaw,” she noted.
Mayor Ann Seamans pointed out that at least now the town has the ability to do something if grass becomes too long and unsightly on properties.
The fines will range from $100 to $1,000.
Vacant lots are not included in this bylaw.
Moncton and Dieppe already have similar bylaws in place to deal with tall grass.
