A ten-year federal-provincial housing agreement will provide $63 million over the next three years to repair, renovate and create affordable housing units in New Brunswick.
Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe MP Ginette Petitpas Taylor says the plan includes creating so-called mixed communities with low-income families, seniors and the disabled and she cites a program from Moncton Headstart as an example.
“They have approximately 10 or 12 homes that are all across the city in different subdivisions that you would never know that are there. It’s really fantastic to see how people are just learning to work together, getting to know each other and kids are going to school together.”
Petitpas Taylor says this is not a new model noting how it has been going on for a number of years in Moncton and she hopes there are more of these types of initiatives since there seems to be lots of benefits.
“This action plan will provide New Brunswickers with timely access to affordable housing that meets their needs,” said Social Development Minister Dorothy Shephard.
“It recognizes the right to suitable housing in healthy, diverse communities and empowers individuals and families to reach their full potential.”
Across New Brunswick, about 150 affordable rental units will be created in the public, private and non-profit sectors and another 5,100 existing units will be repaired and renovated.
