The Higgs government is expected to announce changes soon to the French immersion program in New Brunswick.
The entry point for students is currently Grade One but the province has floated the idea of moving it back to Grade Three again.
New Brunswick Teachers Association (NBTA) president George Daley says the organization is not going to take a stand on the entry point but acknowledges there are still a number of issues to tackle.
“The government needs to address the shortage of French teachers and to make sure that every child who wants to enrol in French immersion has access to it,” he notes.
Daley says another issue is that a child in French immersion in northern New Brunswick has more opportunities to practice or even hear the language compared to a child in the southwestern part of the province.
Daley is wondering how things can be done differently to make sure every child has a fair shot in the French immersion program.
