A new program is being introduced for Mental Health Awareness Week, and it will give everyone the chance to talk, with someone who is there to listen.
Sidewalk Talk has never been held in New Brunswick, but it has been held in other countries and other Canadian cities.
Volunteers will be set up in Moncton City Hall Plaza from May 6th to 10th from 10-2.
Program Coordinator Kayla Breelove Carter says their role will be to just listen, “We are not therapists other than myself. There isn’t any religious affiliation and there’s not a political agenda. It’s just human beings listening to other human beings. They are volunteers that are simply just sitting there and are open and available to listen. Whether the public has something fantastic to say, or maybe they just want to share some challenges they are going through in that moment.”
Breelove-Carter adds, “Sidewalk Talk is to teach and practice heart centred listening in public places. it is also an opportunity to help change the conversation around mental health and the stigma associated with it.”
She is hoping it will become an annual event in New Brunswick, “The more we talk, the more we can feel connected.”
