Initial assessments will begin this afternoon on a closed section of the Trans Canada Highway between Oromocto and Riverglade.
But General Manager of MRDC Al Giberson stresses barriers will not be removed until they are sure it is safe to do so.
He says MRDC is working with the Department of Transportation and other technical agencies to decide whether they will open one lane of the highway with reduced speeds or both lanes.
He expects it will be at least a few days before a decision is made.
MRDC manages that section of the Trans Canada Highway.
Giberson adds they are also watching the water levels closely.
