Over 80 students at JMA Armstrong School in Salisbury staged a walkout yesterday, upset over what they called washroom restrictions.
We received a call from a parent who claimed students were upset they were unable to use the facilities during class time, without an escort.
They said restrictions were apparently put into place in an effort to prevent students from vaping in washrooms.
In an email to our newsroom, spokesperson for the Anglophone East School District Stephanie Patterson says students were asked to use the bathrooms before classes and during the lunch break, because administration were enforcing guidelines, due to concerns over vandalism and vaping.
She adds, “If they should need to use the facilities during class time, students are asked to let their teacher know by making them aware. These guidelines have reduced the amount of traffic in the hallways and bathroom during class time and have eliminated mistreatment of and inappropriate activity in the restrooms. No restrooms have been closed to students.”
There is no word whether or not those students who took part in the walkout will suffer consequences when they return to class today.
