The Out of the Cold Shelter, set up in the old Fire Hall on Assomption Boulevard, will officially close its doors on March 31st.
It was set up in December, and run by the Salvus Clinic and YMCA Reconnect.
Founder of the Humanity Project Charlie Burrell says it temporarily put a roof over the heads of 100 homeless people, “I am anticipating that April 1st is going to be a sad day, because there is going to be 100 people or more back out sleeping on our city streets.”
Burrell says many of them have already begun looking for tents, “That’s about the best plan they have for now, trying to find ways to stay warm and to find a place for the next month or so, until it warms up more.”
The Humanity Project has begun handing out the tents, and has put out a call on Facebook, looking for donations of tents.
He adds that is about the best plan they have for now.
“There are multiple spots in the city, near the downtown, where people gather and put their tents or homemade shelters. Most of the time people group together in numbers because it is safer for them. They try to find a place that is hidden away. No one wants a bunch of people staring at them because they are living in a tent,” Burrell says.
Burrell says we all need to come together to come up with a solution, but to this point he adds, there is no plan in place.
