Moncton High School principal Mike Belong has told Moncton City Council that a transportation issue means many students can’t take part in extracurricular activities.
He noted how the largest school in Moncton – with a lower socioeconomic status – is on the northern edge of the city and students have no way of getting home after regular school hours.
Belong cited data that showed fewer Moncton High students participate in after school sports and clubs compared to their national counterparts.
Codiac Transpo currently offers bus service along Elmwood Drive but only as far north as Pine Tree Village.
Belong is hoping bus service can be offered at least on weekend afternoons, evenings and on Saturdays.
City manager Marc Landry will ask staff to begin working on the cost of extending public transportation to Moncton High.
A report will then be prepared for City Council to consider.
