A true Oak Island legend passed away Sunday at age 95.
The Friends of Oak Island announced the death of Dan Blankenship on its Facebook page.
In the post, the Society says “Dan was a respected and admired man.”
“His perseverance, ingenuity and passion inspired all.”
Blankenship has been involved with the Oak Island fabled treasure hunt since 1965 and moved here from the United States in 1970.
Blankenship said searching for the treasure was “intriguing but difficult and painstaking.”
“Sometimes I think damn foolishness,” said Blankenship.
“I don’t really know. I mean, it’s a hard thing to fathom what motivates some people.”
In the same interview, Blankenship said his search never involved a map or “x” to mark the spot.
“Our predecessors have mostly been interested in the money pit area, which everybody reads about,” said Blankenship.
“But, I personally am interested in the overall scope of Oak Island.”
Blankenship is survived by his son David, daughter Linda and granddaughter Dawn.
