At least three people were taken to hospital this morning after a fire at a multi unit apartment building on Norman Street.
Moncton Fire Platoon Chief Brian Gaudet says the call came in just before 4 this morning fire started in a first floor unit which is partially below ground, but it spread from there.
“When we arrived, we had people trapped on the second floor. The fire had made its way out of the apartment and into the hallway. The main area for the second and third floors were blocked off by the fire. We had to evacuate those tenants using aerial and ground ladders, ” Gaudet says.
Up to 30 tenants total were evacuated. A Codiac Transpo bus was brought in to keep the tenants warm. Canadian Red Cross is also on scene.
Gaudet adds they also rescued four cats, “A couple of them may have some injuries. Two of them have gone to Veterinarian services in Riverview.”
There is significant damage in the unit where the fire started, and there is water and smoke damage to the rest of the building.
No word on a cause yet.
