A sure sign of spring is maple sugar season… and the sap has started running in Southeast New Brunswick.
The milder weather this week is good news since the season is getting started a few weeks later than normal.
Heather Fraser, spokesperson for the City of Moncton’s Maple Sugar Camp in Turtle Creek, says the equipment has fared well after a brutal winter.
“We did have a little bit of deer and coyote (damage) like we have had. We did have a little bit of bear chew in January when we had that little bit of spring thaw though. But not nearly as bad as years in the past,” she notes.
The Moncton Maple Sugar Camp officially opens on Saturday (March 16) and there are free tours at 11am and 2pm on weekends which include hands-on demonstrations of maple production and “candy in the snow”.
Group tours are offered if planned in advance.
Located near the Turtle Creek watershed on Route 910, the camp will be open for 4 to 6 weeks each day from 11am to 4pm depending on how long the season lasts.
