Employees from Cape Bald Packers are awaiting more information, after a fire destroyed the lobster processing plant in Cape Pele.
Mayor Serge Leger says it is one of the Village’s biggest employers with up to 500 people who work there, “Everyone is a part of that factory. They work there or have worked there, or know someone who has. The fishermen and the industry are affected as well. When you see everything burn down at once, it is pretty hard.”
Eight fire departments helped to battle the blaze. Leger says he is grateful to all of their hard work, “I was there all day to support the firemen, and the citizens and employees. It definitely was a hard day.”
There’s no word yet on what caused the fire but RCMP have confirmed they are investigating along with the New Brunswick Fire Marshal.
This is the second Cape Bald Packers to be destroyed by fire in the last three weeks.
Leger says the company is expected to release more information later today or tomorrow as to what their plan will be..
