Condolences are coming in from across the country after a tragic fire in Halifax. Seven children were killed and the parents are in hospital suffering from injuries.
The Multicultural Association of the Greater Moncton Area is reaching out to its Syrian community as they mourn.
MAGMA Spokesperson Justin Ryan says those who work with the most vulnerable people are particularly hard hit at a time like this, “The local community is extremely upset and a lot of our settlement team has been contacted and the crisis counsellor as well, but those whom are mourning and need someone to talk to to try and make sense of it all.”
Ryan says it’s believed that this family arrived in Halifax in 2017, during the wave when hundreds of Syrians came to Canada.
A Go Fund Me Page has been set up for the family,” If you go to the MAGMA Facebook page, we have the post on there, and you can click on the link, if anyone wants to offer support or find out more. We will be providing as much of an update as we can,” Ryan says.
Over $330,000 had already been raised as of 5pm today.
Members of the Anglophone East District Education Council are also looking at ways to help.
“If we can offer staff or resources that they might be able to use to help the families and help the community get through this difficult time,” says Council member Norval McConnell.
He says if this kinds of tragedy had happened here, others would have done the same, “It reminds me of how everyone came together when we had the accident with the basketball team in Bathurst, and seven team members were lost. My memory of that was how significant it was that people reached out to that district in Anglophone North and offered their support.”
