The process to build a new YMCA in Moncton North has taken another step forward.
City Council has approved first reading of the rezoning for the 35,000 square foot multi-purpose facility which will be built on an extension of Twin Oaks Drive.
YMCA of Greater Moncton CEO Zane Korytko says a few more steps lie ahead before a permit can be issued.
“We are at 75 percent completion rate for our design so we need to get to 99 percent and that should be happening in the next few weeks. We have some more city meetings coming up. We have an advisory council meeting as well as the public presentation and consultation that is going to be happening in mid-March,” he notes.
Korytko says shovels can hopefully be in the ground as soon as we have a spring thaw.
The three levels of government are each contributing $4 million and the city is also spending $2 million to extend Twin Oaks Drive.
Additional options have been discussed for the building including a rink or a pool and even a library.
Korytko says if other partners decide to come to the table, they are more than open to listening.
The quiet phase of a capital campaign is now underway and he adds the public launch is planned for later this year.
