The federal health minister believes Canadians are generally happy with the new Canada Food Guide which was recently updated for the first time in 12 years.
Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe MP Ginette Petitpas Taylor says the new version was based on science with no outside influences from industry.
Health professionals and dieticians are in favour of the changes but farmers are unhappy with less focus on dairy products in this edition.
But Petitpas Taylor notes milk is in the protein section of the guide even though it doesn’t have its own category anymore.
She says many Canadians can’t drink milk due to allergies or other reasons but she recognizes milk is a good source of calcium.
Petitpas Taylor says the new food guide emphasizes a plate of food with half composed of fruits and vegetables along with a protein section and a whole grains section.
