Moncton City Councillor Shawn Crossman says he has a long road ahead, but he is feeling great after having a stem cell transplant.
It has been around three weeks since Shawn Crossman had the procedure done, “This is one of the steps of prolonging my remission of Multiple Myeloma cancer. The whole idea here was to kill any bad stem cells that I may have had left in my body and they basically put fresh stem cells from my body which they took out mid December.”
Doctors expect it will take 100 days for a full recovery, “I’ve only been almost three weeks into it, but I am feeling full of energy.”
He will have to continue going for blood tests and meeting with his oncologist on a weekly basis, “They want to make sure that they track this and that my recovery is successful. That is the key here, to make sure that I am positive.”
Crossman returned to city council this week, and he says it felt really good to be there
“I am so grateful for the citizens who have given me support and well wishes. It is a really tough road. I have heard from a lot of people who are also battling Multiple Myeloma, who have told me that they have lived for fifteen to twenty years after having a stem cell transplant. That gives me so much hope, ” Crossman says.
Crossman is also sporting a new look. As a result of chemotherapy, he lost all of his hair, but he has received a lot of positive comments., “I am getting a lot of positive response about it, and I really have become comfortable with it. It is a little strange in the cold weather to wear a hat in the house, but it just one of the steps in fighting cancer.”
