The New Brunswick Anti-Shale Gas Alliance has been given intervenor status in the court case against the federal carbon tax.
The government of Saskatchewan is leading the fight against the tax in the Saskatchewan Court of Appeals next week in Regina.
Anti-Shale Gas Alliance spokesperson Jim Emberger believes the Trudeau government has the right to impose a federal carbon tax to fight climate change.
He says we are already feeling the affects right here in New Brunswick.
“You know with things we have all experienced like tropical storms, ice storms, storm surges along the coast and changes in species in the Bay of Fundy… and you could go on and name a dozen other things.”
Emberger says science tells us the climate is changing faster than anyone expected.
Besides opposition from Saskatchewan and Ontario, the Higgs government is also against Ottawa’s carbon tax which will mean higher prices on fossil fuels such as gasoline and home heating oil.
The tax is expected to be imposed on provinces which don’t have their own carbon reduction plans – including New Brunswick – in April.
The Higgs government wants Ottawa to a least delay the tax until a court ruling.
The case will be heard starting February 13th.
