2018 proved to be another strong year for building permits in Moncton with the city just shy of a record set in 2017.
Almost $223 million in permits were issued last year compared to the record of $243 million.
Commercial projects made up 56 percent of the total including an expansion at Organigram, a new Hyatt Hotel, a new Costco location and growth at the Kent Distribution Centre.
“This level of growth is good news for all Monctonians,” explained Mayor Dawn Arnold. “We are seeing that our City continues to be of interest to investors and developers, international newcomers, as well as other Canadians outside of New Brunswick.”
Institutional permits were 18 percent of the total but were down from 2017 and included a new middle school in the north end and a nursing home on Morton Avenue.
Residential development represented almost 25 percent of the year’s total value but home building was also lower than the previous year with 59 single unit homes, 80 duplex units and five apartment buildings.
“Our team remains optimistic about our level of growth and diversity”, said Kevin Silliker, Director of Economic Development. “We are routinely seen as a pace leader in the province, and we continue to look for new ways to help our community be prosperous.”
