The Higgs government has completed its funding commitment to the 2021 Francophonie Games which casts a bigger shadow over the future of the event.
GNB spokesperson Stephanie Bilodeau says the province had funded the organizing committee by providing monthly payments which ended in mid-December.
The total payout for the last fiscal year was $930,000.
Bilodeau says further funding has not been requested and the province understands the committee can still function.
She adds any decisions on future requests for provincial funding would be referred to the upcoming budget process.
Five board members on the committee resigned last month amid controversy over the skyrocketing cost from $17 million to $130 million dollars.
Moncton and Dieppe are set to co-host the Games in 2021 and each has pledged $750,000 but both cities have said they won’t contribute any more money.
Although the federal government does financially support large sporting events, Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe MP Ginette Petitpas Taylor recently indicated it’s up to the province to decide the fate of the Games.
