A Moncton man has started collecting socks as a part of an initiative launched by a Canadian group called WE BE US.
Mike Hayes says he was skating one day when his son’s feet got cold, “We had to go home, and he was hustling to get there to get his feet warm. The relief he had when we walked into the house was almost instant. I started to think, how many people in our city are homeless and can’t experience warm feet. A couple of hours later, I was listening to a PodCast, and they were talking about this initiative of 20, 000 socks. They wanted to gather and donate to homeless shelters across the country on February 22nd through the WE BE US community organization. I sent them a message and now I’m asking people to donate socks to support this cause.”
Hayes says,” When we think of donating to shelters, coats, hats and mitts often come to mind, but the Founder of the Humanity Project Charles Burrell says socks are the number one item handed out each day.”
Hayes is looking for adult sized socks, for men and women, and they must be new.
Businesses and schools in the area are now collecting the pairs from staff and students, and Hayes will be making the donation for them.
“When you have a pair of warm feet, then the rest of your body is warm too. So socks are something the shelters are definitely in need of,” Hayes says.
Hayes has set a goal of 500 pairs of socks to donate on February 22nd to the Humanity Project.
