The future of La Francophonie Games being hosted by Moncton and Dieppe in 2021 is uncertain amid controversy over the skyrocketing cost.
The provincial government is expected to make a decision this month after the cost of the event jumped from $17 to $130 million.
Dieppe mayor Yvon Lapierre says council has already pledged a lot of money for a small city and has no intention of contributing more.
“What we’ve budgeted for in the next three years, starting this year in 2019, is $250,000 each for a total of $750,000.”
Lapierre says the games do come with infrastructure needs including two soccer fields and a small stadium.
He says the city hoped this would be a legacy project and meet the needs of local soccer clubs.
The mayor adds the decision to host the event lies in the hands of upper levels of government.
