Disappointment from members of the Parent School Support Committee after news that planning work for a new Bessborough school is being delayed.
A decision was made earlier this year by the Anglophone East District Education Council, to make an application to the province for a new west end school that would replace Bessborough and Hillcrest.
But that isn’t in the cards right now, according to the capital budget released by the provincial government.
PSSC Chair Dale Hughes says she was initially very disappointed and angry with the news, but now that she has had some time to process it, she is hopeful this is just a delay, “My concern is not so much the postponement of the school. It is reasonable to expect hiccups in the process. My concern is in the postponement of the planning process, because there has already been money allotted in the budget from last year.”
Hughes says Bessborough is overcrowded, and there are already three portables. The enrollment is on a constant increase, and the building itself is also aging.
“We are going to continue working on this initiative for sure. We are hoping this is just a hiccup. I think when we get more clarity on the process, then we’ll be able to move forward,” Hughes says.
