Moncton’s new emergency shelter has only been open for a week and already a fundraising phone scam is circulating which solicits donations for the Moncton Fire Department.
City officials say the fire department never asks for money this way and all community fundraisers are clearly identified.
Based on reports received, the caller is asking for donations from anywhere from $100 to $300 and says the money would support the new out-of-the-cold shelter at the former fire hall on Assomption Boulevard.
Residents are being reminded to never give out their credit card or other personal information over the phone to unknown individuals.
If you’ve received a call like this, report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
If you have given money in this scam, contact Codiac RCMP at 506-857-2400.
