Emergency Out of the Cold Homeless Shelter (91.9 The Bend photo)
The former fire station on Assomption Boulevard is about to become an emergency out-of-the-cold shelter thanks to a partnership between the City of Moncton, the provincial government, the Salvus Clinic and YMCA ReConnect.
The shelter officially opens on Saturday and will operate during the daytime hours as a warming centre (8am to 4pm) and as a shelter in the overnight hours (4pm to 8am).
YMCA ReConnect’s Lisa Ryan says the building is zoned for 60 people and 20 to 30 cots will be set up initially – and she adds no one will be turned away.
“We’re going to make sure everyone has access to a safe place. There are other shelters in the city that we will be working in partnership with ensuring that any individual who walks through our doors will be referred into a bed.”
The province has announced $106,000 toward the temporary homeless shelter and the City of Moncton is providing $20,000.
Volunteers are being recruited through the Salvus Clinic at 506-384-7238 and corporate volunteers through the United Way at 506-858-8600.
Monetary donations are also being sought along with winter outerwear, boots, pillows, hygiene products, non-perishable snacks and gift cards.
These items can be dropped off at the new shelter on Friday, November 30th from 1pm to 7pm.
