Starting in January, the mayor and councillors of Dieppe will see salary increases in each of the next six years.
Two councillors voted against the hikes including Councillor Daniel Allain who noted how it’s always taboo when politicians give themselves raises.
Allain believes the controversy over municipal salary increases could have been avoided.
“It’s unfortunate that the Municipalities Act or the province of New Brunswick does not provide a scale to increase salaries across the board.”
By June 2024, the mayor’s salary will climb to $78,000 (from the current $35,825) and a councillor’s salary will rise to $31,200 (from the current $16,800).
Councillor salaries in Dieppe had not been increased in 20 years.
Federal tax changes in the new year will also claw back the net income of elected officials.
