There’s a new way for kids aged 6 to 15 to read in French at the Moncton Public Library.
City Librarian Chantale Bellemare says Biblio-Connection adds one more way of reading.
It’s software that projects digital books on a large screen, and the reader uses movement recognition technology to navigate.
“We do a lot of programs with kids like story time, scientific afternoons, kindergarten readiness program,” says Bellemare. “Having that tool offers another way to read books with some interaction.”
Bellemare says the software is flexible and makes reading very accessible.
“Not only you have the standard version of the book, you have the audio version, you have one that is audio description so that is a voice describing what is on the picture for a kid who has loss of vision,” says Bellemare.
She adds there is even an option for French Sign Language.
Bellemare says currently the 14 books available are only in French, but she hopes the France based company that owns it will expand.
“Will they add more titles in the coming year? Are they open to adding titles from other countries than France? Are they open to expand this application to other European languages such as English” asks Bellemare.
The next opportunity for youth to use Biblio-Connection is during KidsFest on Saturday April 23rd on the opening day of the Frye Festival.
