It may come as a surprise to many in Moncton but the oldest building in the city does not yet have heritage status.
Trites House was built in 1769 along the riverfront by one of the founding families in the area.
Dawn Lutes, president of the Permanent Settlers Association, says her group has been pushing for the official designation for some time.
“We would trust that the City would begin to realize our heritage is important… not only to the early German settlers, but also to the Acadians and also to the Mi’kmaq,” notes Lutes.
Trites House is on a list of historic properties but the City of Moncton is currently working on a new heritage policy which has left official heritage status of the building at a standstill.
