The colder weather has arrived which is not good news for the more than 120 people who are estimated to be homeless in Greater Moncton.
YMCA director of outreach programs Lisa Ryan says with the shelters operating at maximum capacity and with many choosing to sleep rough outdoors, other options are being discussed with community organizations.
“(We’ve been) talking about organizing some sort of community out-of-the-cold shelter when the temperatures really start to drop,” she notes.
Ryan says her team has been handing out $5 gift cards to those who are sleeping rough so they can get a warm beverage and a snack before services in the community open in the morning.
She adds the lack of resources for safe places to sleep in our region is alarming.
