Canada’s premiers are showing a united front when it comes to American tariffs.
They say we have to tighten up the border and increase defense spending, not just to appease the Americans, but because it’s the right thing to do.
Doug Ford is the chair of the Council of Premiers and says they are pushing the federal government to increase the number of Canada Border Service agents, in places like the Windson/Detroit border crossing, which is the busiest border crossing in the country.
“It’s not CBSA’s fault, they needed to be funded to get boats in the water to make sure they patrol the (Detroit) River coming into our country,” Ford told a news conference Monday afternoon after meeting all weekend with Canada’s premiers.
“That’s not a big ask. Let’s get it done. We’re there to support them, but this is a federal government’s responsibility.”
Ford says the tariffs will only make it more expensive for people living on both sides of the border.
“The only people who get hurt on these tariffs are the Canadians and Americans. And you know who wins…China wins! And we need Canadians winning and Americans winning. Not China.”
Premier Danielle Smith of Alberta says all of the provinces have something of importance to offer the US economy and they have to get message across to their American counterparts.
