Collections are underway in Salisbury for those who won’t have a Christmas meal on their table.
Salisbury Fire Chief Brad MacLeod says they are working with the Helping Hands food bank to collect 100 turkeys and 50 hams.
“They reached out to me just a little over a week ago, and they were notified that they wouldn’t be receiving turkeys this year. So they contacted us at the Salisbury Fire Department to see if we wanted to help with the turkey drive, similar to what they were doing in Moncton, and we decided to go ahead with that,” MacLeod says.
Salisbury used to receive the Christmas birds from the Moncton turkey drive, but that changed due to increased demand.
Helping Hands and the Salisbury Fire Department began their collection last Thursday.
“You can drop off Monday through Friday during the day at the Salisbury town office, and on Monday and Thursday evenings, at the fire hall from 7 pm until 9 pm. On Saturdays, we’re open at the fire hall from 10 to 3 pm.”
All of the Christmas birds and hams will be handed out to families in the community.
MacLeod adds that the firefighters were not hesitant to get involved in this turkey drive. He says firefighters are great at helping communities.
“That’s what we do, and that’s 150 families we’re talking about here. That’s that’s quite a lot that are impacted by this. We only expect, in future years, that number will continue to rise,” MacLeod says.
Monetary donations are also being accepted in person, or online.
