Over 725 grades 6 to 8 students will enter the halls of Wabanaki School for the first time on Tuesday.
It is the newly built west-end school.
Anglophone East Superintendent Randy MacLEAN says the majority of the construction is complete, “We’ve been going straight at this for 18 months, and we are very close to the finish line. The school will still have some pieces that are going to come online during September, including the gymnasium, but we’re set to go on Tuesday.”
The school is located next to Bernice MacNaughton High School. The original plan was for the school to replace Hillcrest and Bessborough Schools, but due to increased enrollments changes had to be made.
Bessborough School will now operate as a K to 5 school and Hillcrest moves to become an Alternative Learning Site.
As of Thursday, 731 students were registered to attend the Wabanaki School, which was built to accommodate over 800 students.
MacLEAN adds it has been a long time coming, after a five-year wait.
