Church leaders in downtown Moncton believe there is a real need to open a drop-in centre for the homeless.
In a presentation to Moncton City Council on Monday, Reverend Richard Jackson of First Baptist Church said individuals need socialization in safe places.
“One of the challenges we are facing, as is the business community, is where to direct people for the afternoons,” said Jackson who noted how the mornings are covered but the unhoused need a place in the afternoons.
“Those who are living alone in rooms and apartments are looking for safe places to connect with other people and those in shelters require safe places where they can go for peace and quiet,” added Jackson.
Jackson said the churches are willing to help provide some volunteers for a 24/7 drop-in centre with substance abuse supports.
He added their last resort is to ban people from their programs and properties.
City council has directed staff to work with the Province of New Brunswick to develop a comprehensive plan for the operation of a drop-in centre.
The plan is expected to be presented to council by May 31.
